Queensrÿche Progressively Rocked Hard Rock
Since 1980, QUEENSRŸCHE has been defining progressive metal with a powerful and precise sound that is hard to duplicate. Through lineup changes and the passage of time, the band's musical identity has remained remarkably intact, continuing to deliver the sophisticated songwriting and incomparable musicianship that made them legends in the genre.
On July 24, I had the pleasure of seeing one of my favorite live bands at Hard Rock Live inside the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Wheatland, California. Having seen QUEENSRŸCHE multiple times over the years in smaller venues, it was exciting to experience them on the larger stage. The bigger production, outstanding acoustics, and expansive lighting design elevated an already exceptional live performance.
For 14 years, Todd La Torre has been the band's frontman, and any debate over whether he belongs should have been settled long ago. His vocal performance was nothing short of phenomenal! His incredible range, flawless pitch, and commanding stage presence continues to push the band forward. While some fans still compare him to former vocalist Geoff Tate, the reality is simple: La Torre has earned his place in QUEENSRŸCHE. Tate is still out there touring for those who want that experience, but this version of the band is every bit worthy of carrying the QUEENSRŸCHE name.
I was fortunate enough to be seated in the second row, giving me an incredible view of the stage. Opening with the classic "Queen of the Reich," the band immediately seized the audience's attention. Before the first note rang out, a cinematic intro played across the massive video screen, featuring the mysterious Queen herself beckoning the audience to heed her call. It was a dramatic, futuristic setup that perfectly set the tone for the night.
As each member took the stage, they launched into an aural assault. La Torre's soaring vocals were matched by Mike Stone and Michael Wilton's razor sharp guitar work, Eddie Jackson's thunderous bass lines, and Casey Grillo's relentless drumming. Together, they reminded everyone in attendance why QUEENSRŸCHE remains one of progressive metal's most influential and enduring bands.
One of the night's highlights was watching an audience made up of longtime fans and newcomers alike singing every word to nearly every song. There's something special about seeing music span generations, and the energy inside Hard Rock Live reflected exactly that. La Torre made the performance even more memorable by grabbing a couple of fans' cell phones and singing directly into them, creating unforgettable moments that had the crowd cheering even louder. His interaction with the audience felt genuine and helped make the show feel personal despite the larger venue.
This marked my third time seeing QUEENSRŸCHE with La Torre behind the mic, and while I still appreciate the intimacy of the smaller clubs where I've seen them before, Hard Rock Live proved to be an ideal venue for this band. The superior acoustics, impressive lighting, and spacious stage gave the performance room to breathe, allowing the band to fully showcase both their musicianship and stage presence. It was the perfect setting for a night of progressive metal, and if you felt lucky afterward, the casino was just steps away.
If there was one criticism, it would be that the set seemed to fly by. I also would have loved to see some vinyl available at the merchandise booth, although my wallet probably appreciated the omission!
